2008 NBDA Statistics
- An estimated total of 18.5 million bicycles were sold in the United States alone.
- 44.7 million Americans age seven and older were estimated to have ridden a bicycle six or more times, according to the
National Sporting Goods Association.
- There were 3.1 million bicycles sold by 4,339 speciality bicycle retailers operating within the U.S.
The Standing Cyclist Dollar Pledge Program is a work-in-progress collaboration between shops and choice charities,
across the United States. The concept is simple. Local bike shops, online and chain retailers pledge one dollar,
per projected bicycle sale, to a favorite cause each year. Based on NBDA current stats, this can result in nearly 19
million dollars raised in support of special programs and organizations around the world. This is an exciting opportunity
for the cycling industry to collectively make a difference.
